Learn how to unpack, rinse, and brew with your pour-over coffee starter kit. Step-by-step setup for a slow, mindful coffee ritual.

Quick answer

Unpack your pour-over coffee starter kit, rinse the carafe and mug with hot water, insert a paper filter into the dripper, and follow the slow pour technique for a balanced cup.

Why the SCS Starter Set is designed for slow mornings

The SCS Starter Set from KINTO brings together the SLOW COFFEE STYLE collection — a carafe, dripper, and stacking mug that encourage you to take your time. The set does not include a gooseneck kettle, so you will need one for precise pouring, but the included 600 ml carafe is heatproof and doubles as a serving vessel.

How to set up your pour-over coffee starter kit

  1. Rinse the carafe and mug with hot water: Preheat the glass carafe and stacking mug by filling them with hot tap water. Swirl and discard. This warms the vessels so your coffee stays hot longer and prevents thermal shock. Skipping this step can cause the carafe to crack if you pour boiling water directly into cold glass.
  2. Place the dripper on the carafe and insert a paper filter: Set the SCS dripper on top of the carafe. Fold the seam of a standard cone filter, place it inside, and rinse with hot water to remove paper taste. Discard rinse water. Always rinse the filter — unrinsed paper can add a cardboard flavor to your first brew.
  3. Add ground coffee and level the bed: Add 15-18 grams of medium-fine ground coffee (about 2-3 tablespoons) and gently tap the dripper to level the grounds. Do not press down. Too fine a grind will clog the filter; too coarse will under-extract. Aim for a texture like sea salt.
  4. Bloom with a small amount of hot water: Pour just enough water (about twice the weight of the coffee) to saturate the grounds. Wait 30-45 seconds for the coffee to degas and swell. Skipping the bloom leads to uneven extraction and a flat-tasting cup.
  5. Slowly pour the remaining water in circles: Starting from the center, pour in concentric circles outward, keeping the water level just below the rim. Aim for a total brew time of 2.5-3 minutes. Pour too fast and the water will channel through the grounds; pour too slow and the coffee will over-extract and taste bitter.
  6. Remove the dripper and enjoy: Once the water has fully dripped through, lift the dripper off the carafe. Swirl the carafe gently to mix the brew, then pour into your stacking mug. Letting the dripper sit on the carafe after brewing can cause bitter drips to fall into your coffee.
